About the field trip:
Just a 30-minute bus ride from the conference hotel is Bacon Ridge Branch, the site of the first stream in Maryland to be restored using only wood, harvested on site, for structure.
We will pick you up at the conference hotel, provide a bag lunch, and take you to the Elks Camp restoration site on Bacon Ridge in nearby Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We will bring you back to the conference hotel in time for dinner. The sites will require walking on uneven terrain and knee boots are highly encouraged. We will talk/answer questions about the project on the bus trip to and from the sites as well as during the tour.
The Elks Camp project, located on Bacon Ridge Branch, was completed in 2019, so it has been ‘in the ground’ for 4 years. This 18,000-ft long full-delivery stream restoration project uses all wood structures harvested on-site to reduce costs, improve habitat complexity, and deliver a more sustainable project. This project client is GreenVest, with funding from the Maryland State Highway Administration’s full delivery stream restoration services contract. Biohabitats is the designer and EQR is the contractor.
Who “wood” miss this opportunity to see an approach to stream restoration that dramatically reduces a project’s cost and carbon footprint? Join us!
